Welcome back! 欢迎回来! I hope you all had a very wonderful
summer. Chinese class will start early this year! The first day of the Chinese class will be on September 5th.
Also, there is another big change this year for Chinese program. Based on the
research and teachers’ discussion, the first grade will choose their language
instead of waiting until 2nd grade. Here is more information about 2012-2013
Chinese class:
Course
Description:
Mandarin is China’s official language. The purpose
is to improve student speaking, writing, listening, and reading in real-world
situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context. The course follows International Foreign Language Standard called the “5 C’s”
(communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, communities) to connect our
class room to the whole world and prepare our children to be global citizens.
Content:
We will follow the standard to develop our own
learning materials from K to 8th Grade. At the same time, we will use Better
Chinese, Chinese Paradise, Experience Chinese 体验汉语 and Kuai Le
Han Yu 快乐汉语 (Happy Chinese) as supporting study materials.
In addition, you may expect your Chinese student
to learn:
· “Pinyin” (four tones of pronunciation
of the Chinese characters)
·
Vocabulary and simple interactions’ communication through following
topics: Greeting, My Classroom, Counting, Colors and Shapes, Time and Date, My
Body, My Home, Sports and Hobbies, Food and Drinks, Birthday and Festivals,
Shopping, Daily Life, Location, Occupations, Animals and Nature, Seasons and
Weather, Nationalities and Cities, Traffic and Travel, and more.
· How to recognize the basic Chinese
Characters and read short stories
· Rules of writing Chinese Characters
including the strokes, the sequence of the strokes and the radicals (strokes
and radicals are marks on the page which combine to create Chinese characters).
· How to write short sentences in
correct Chinese sentence construction
· Chinese culture, such as traditional
Games, Chinese songs, Calligraphy, Paper-cutting, Chinese painting, and Chinese
cooking.
· How to type in Chinese into Computer
for upper grades.
· How Chinese people celebrate
traditional holidays in China
Materials:
Text: Kuai Le Hanyu for 6th to 8th Grade
(web link will be provided to the student.)
K- 8 Teacher created materials and some materials
from donated to our Confucius Chinese classroom as part of our Hanban grant.
Course
Requirements:
· Read all handout materials. Attend all classes
on time and be prepared. Follow class rules. Participate in all class
and group discussions.
· Keep all classroom handouts in Chinese folder
and bring notebook to class for 5th grade and up every day.
· Homework:
Please turn in your homework on time. 2nd Grade and up will have homework once
a week. Please bring you planner to Chinese class every Thursday. Homework is
due the following Monday. Chinese is a standards graded subject like all other
core subjects at Cascade. Students will be graded based on progress toward main
objectives for lessons and units.
