中文课开学快讯

Dear CHPCS Parent(s):

Welcome back! 欢迎回来! I hope you all had a very wonderful summer. Chinese class will start early this year! The first day of the Chinese class will be on September 5th. Also, there is another big change this year for Chinese program. Based on the research and teachers’ discussion, the first grade will choose their language instead of waiting until 2nd grade. Here is more information about 2012-2013 Chinese class:

Course Description:

Mandarin is China’s official language. The purpose is to improve student speaking, writing, listening, and reading in real-world situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context.  The course follows International Foreign Language Standard called the “5 C’s” (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, communities) to connect our class room to the whole world and prepare our children to be global citizens.

Content:

We will follow the standard to develop our own learning materials from K to 8th Grade. At the same time, we will use Better Chinese, Chinese Paradise, Experience Chinese 体验汉语 and Kuai Le Han Yu 快乐汉语 (Happy Chinese) as supporting study materials.

In addition, you may expect your Chinese student to learn:

· “Pinyin” (four tones of pronunciation of the Chinese characters)

·  Vocabulary and simple interactions’ communication through following topics: Greeting, My Classroom, Counting, Colors and Shapes, Time and Date, My Body, My Home, Sports and Hobbies, Food and Drinks, Birthday and Festivals, Shopping, Daily Life, Location, Occupations, Animals and Nature, Seasons and Weather, Nationalities and Cities, Traffic and Travel, and more.

· How to recognize the basic Chinese Characters and read short stories

· Rules of writing Chinese Characters including the strokes, the sequence of the strokes and the radicals (strokes and radicals are marks on the page which combine to create Chinese characters).

· How to write short sentences in correct Chinese sentence construction

· Chinese culture, such as traditional Games, Chinese songs, Calligraphy, Paper-cutting, Chinese painting, and Chinese cooking.

· How to type in Chinese into Computer for upper grades.

· How Chinese people celebrate traditional holidays in China

Materials:

Text: Kuai Le Hanyu for 6th to 8th Grade (web link will be provided to the student.)

K- 8 Teacher created materials and some materials from donated to our Confucius Chinese classroom as part of our Hanban grant.

Course Requirements:

· Read all handout materials. Attend all classes on time and be prepared. Follow class rules. Participate in all class and group discussions.

· Keep all classroom handouts in Chinese folder and bring notebook to class for 5th grade and up every day.
